When the tragic news about the problems at Arlington National Cemetery began to break, it was first thought that the problems were isolated and in certain locations of the hallowed gravesite. That is no longer true.
Both the former Superintendent and his Deputy were summoned today to a US Senate hearing to give testimony. It's now feared that up to 6,600 Arlington graves may be mismarked or unidentified altogether. In his testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on Contracting Oversight, former Superintendent John C. Metzler stated, "I was the senior government official in charge and I accept full responsibility for all my actions and all of my team's actions." The admission, of course, doesn't fix the unresolved issue of properly identifying the remains of so many honored deceased at Arlington. A complicating factor in resolving this tragedy is the dearth of technology in the administration of the graves at Arlington.
